Freedom House

Freedom House Inc., founded in 1983 by Nedda Simon, is a nonprofit organization committed to providing compassionate, confidential, and free services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Illinois. Our mission encompasses supporting survivors and engaging in community outreach, prevention education, and professional training to foster a safer environment. We offer a comprehensive range of services, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, counseling, legal advocacy, awareness and prevention education to the community, and medical support, ensuring that individuals affected by abuse receive the necessary assistance to rebuild their lives. Our dedicated direct-service volunteers help by participating in activities such as emergency medical out-calls, client transportation, hotline support, and awareness events. Through these efforts, Freedom House Inc. strives to empower survivors and educate the community, aiming to eradicate domestic and sexual violence and promote a culture of respect and safety for all.

Volunteering with Freedom House Inc. offers various opportunities to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Roles include medical advocacy, where volunteers respond to survivors at area hospitals, crisis hotline support, client transportation, participation in awareness events, and providing childcare. Prospective volunteers must complete an application, participate in an interview, and undergo comprehensive training comprising online courses and in-person sessions. This training covers topics such as crisis intervention techniques and understanding the dynamics of domestic and sexual violence. By volunteering, individuals play a crucial role in empowering survivors and fostering a safer community.
