Gimme Shelter is an event hosted by Phoenix Community Development Services raise awareness of the challenges faced by those in our community without homes and to give our citizens an opportunity to help end homelessness in Central Illinois. On Friday, February 16, community members will spend the night outside in a cardboard box or a motor vehicle - from 6:00 pm in the evening until 6:00 am the following morning. Gimme Shelter will bring the community together to experience just a taste of what it is like to have no home.
Proceeds from Gimme Shelter will benefit Phoenix Community Development Services’ efforts to provide supportive housing and outreach services to the area’s homeless population.
Volunteers are need to help with tearing down the warming center and load items up into the trailer to take back to our administration building, starting at 5:30 AM enjoy a free breakfast on us at the RiverPlex! We will tear down until 7 AM on Saturday, February 17. Then you would follow the trailer to our administration and unload the items into a conference room, which only takes 30 minutes.
